A win for all

When folks mention Hartselle many times it is referred to as the “City of Southern Hospitality,” 10 minutes from Decatur, a bedroom community and by naysayers as a “one-horse town.” But after last Thursday night it will also be remembered as the home of the Hartselle Tigers – 2011 Class 5A State Champions. Hartselle defeated Vigor to win the playoffs and brought home the long sought after blue state championship trophy. This could not have happened to a better group of people.

What really helps to make this special is that not only was this a win for the football team, but also for the whole town as well. In fact, if you were in attendance, it almost seemed that all of Hartselle was in attendance. At the kickoff at 7 pm the lower level of the west section of Bryant-Denny Stadium was filled with Tiger fans. Someone mentioned halfheartedly that the last person leaving Hartselle for Tuscaloosa last Thursday evening should turn out the lights. It is amazing when discussing the game that I have actually talked to more folks that attended than did not. Even those who were not able to attend in person were there in sprit and by way of television.

In about six weeks, I will have lived in Hartselle for 50 years and have witnessed lots of great events during this time. However, this was one of the times that I could not have been prouder for anyone to know Hartselle was home. Hartselle has always been a great supporter of Tiger football and this year was no exception. When the players on the field looked up into the stands, there could be no doubt that they had the support of their town.

It was a dream come true for the players, coaches, parents, cheerleaders, band members and classmates and the town was there to share in it.

The slogan “It’s Our Time” had been used many times throughout this season and it carried through all the way until the last second ticked off the time clock. This team absolutely proved the old adage that “there is no I in team.” This was a moment in history that many will not soon forget and I for one am glad that I was able to be included in that time and that we all that call Hartselle home could be part of this team.

Congratulations players and coaches and all who supported the 2011 State Champions. Proud of you and of our town.
