Funeral for James W. Newton, 96, of Hartselle was Sun., Nov. 27, at 3 p.m. at New Center Baptist Church with Bro. Ben Bates officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Burial was in New Center Cemetery.

Mr. Newton died Sat., Nov. 26, 2011, at his residence. He was born Nov. 26, 1915, in Tallapoosa County to Joseph Ebolee Newton and Alvie Mayne Wesson Newton. He was s a member of New Center Baptist Church and owner of the former Newton Insurance Agency in Hartselle. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Stringer Newton, and a son, James W. Newton Jr.

He is survived by two daughters, Maxine Gibson and husband Henry and Faye Cobbs and husband Milford, both of Hartselle; three brothers, Joe Newton of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Edward “Pete” Newton of Vinemont and Leon Newton of Valley; five surviving grandchildren, Jim Gibson and wife Kandy, Jerry Cobbs and wife Rita, Lee Gibson and wife Felecia, all of Hartselle, Donna Coleman and husband John of Madison and Mike Gibson and wife Ryan of Decatur; and nine great-grandchildren, Brandon, Alice, Colton and Jonathan Gibson, Garrett, Joel and Ethan Cobbs, Chris Halbrooks and wife Tess, and Hayden Coleman.

Pallbearers were grandsons and great grandsons.

The family thanks all of Mr. Newton’s caregivers and Hospice of North Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to New Center Baptist Church Building Fund or Gideons International.
