Curry at No. 2 Hartselle

Homecoming week: The Tigers are having homecoming tonight at J.P. Cain Stadium. The homecoming queen will be crowned at halftime of tonight’s game. The winner will be selected from the group shown above. Also, Curry will be the visitors of a homecoming game for the second straight week. They fell at Mortimer Jordan 42-14.

Top 5 defense: Hartselle still ranks among the top 5 in scoring defense even after giving up 38 points in the last two weeks. They are averaging allowing 5.7 points per game. Class 1A’s Brantley is leading all AHSAA schools with a 3.3 per game average. Hartselle is also No. 21 in scoring differential, with an average margin of victory of 31.5 points.

Doesn’t take much: All it took was two carries for Masio Stover to break the 100-yard mark. He had a 55-yard touchdown in the first quarter and didn’t touch the ball again until he broke free for a 52-yard run in the third quarter, setting up a Tiger field goal.

Curry much improved: Curry has already surpassed its win total from last year with a 4-2 record. They have already scored 157 points through six games. Last year, they only scored 170 points in 10 games. If the Yellow Jackets had beaten Mortimer Jordan last week, they would have clinched their first playoff berth in nine years.

Brewer at Walker

Series: Walker leads 5-0

Last meeting: Walker won 50-15 in 2010

Double-trouble: The Patriots ran the double-pass play twice against Cullman last week, and both times it went for touchdowns. Those trick plays allowed Brewer to notch its highest point total of the season, but the Patriots still lost to the Bearcats 53-25.

Walker catching fire: After a dropping back-to-back games with Cullman and Hartselle, the Vikings have hit their stride beating Russellville in a non-region game 32-17 and destroying Hayden 46-6.

Easier road ahead for Brewer: After the Walker game, Brewer will face Hayden and West Point, which only have one win each. They, however, will end the season at Priceville, which has shown much improvement in 2011.

Priceville at Brooks

Series: Brooks leads 1-0

Last meeting: Brooks won 55-6 in 2010

Heartbreak alley: The Bulldogs have lost two games by a combined total of 10 points. They fell to Danville in double overtime and the comeback ran out of time against Ardmore. Unfortunately, the road gets tougher over the next three weeks as they play Brooks, Deshler and West Limestone, which have a combined four losses between them.

Offense hasn’t been a problem: The Bulldogs have been able to score pretty much at will over the last two weeks, racking up 78 points. In fact, Priceville has already scored more points this season (170) than it did last year (156).

Danville at Elkmont

Series: Danville leads 3-0

Last meeting: Danville won 21-20 in 2010

Offense struggles: The Hawks have struggled on offense this season, scoring just 68 points in six games. If you take out the 41 Danville scored on Priceville, Danville has only scored 27 points in its five other games. If Danville wants to remain undefeated against Elkmont all-time, the team must manufacture some points.

Elkmont looks for redemption: Elkmont finished the season on a bad note last year, losing six of its last seven games. In that stretch, the Red Devils lost a pair of one-point games including the 21-20 loss to Danville.

Fultondale at Falkville

Series: Fultondale leads 2-1

Last meeting: Fultondale won 55-8 in 2010

First win: Falkville notched its first win since beating Cold Springs 14-6 in 2010. The Blue Devils’ last win over a team other than Cold Springs was a 21-20 win over Oakman in 2009.

Ferocious Fultondale: After the Wildcats had a disappointing loss to Oakman in Week 5, they responded by destroying Westminster Christian 54-13. Fultondale will need to win its next three region games to have a shot at being the No. 2 seed in the region.
