Danville Volunteer Fire Department will host a Swamp Johns fundraiser at Station one on Saturday, April 23, at 11 a.m. Prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. The menu will consist of chicken, catfish or shrimp and all of the trimmings. The fire department will benefit from the proceeds.
Special belated happy birthday wishes go out to Peyton Evans on April 18, Jim McAbee on April 19, Dale Boyd and Stoshia Logan, both on April 20.
Happy birthday wishes go out to Callie Parker and Emma Parker, both on April 21.
The Morgan County Fire Fighters Association held its annual awards banquet on Saturday, April 16. President Stanley Linderman welcomed everyone and the Honor Guard posted the colors with Van Stisher singing the National Anthem. The invocation was given by Chaplain Steve Wilson. Following the meal, entertainment was provided by Shera Summerford. Guest speaker was Mike Graves, chief of the Vinemont Volunteer Fire Department.
Awards were presented as follows: Alabama Fire College Instructor of the Year – Tommy MacPher-son, Brindlee Mountain Volunteer Fire Depart-ment; Rookie of the Year—Stephanie Har-grove, Ebenezer Volunteer Fire Department; Female  EMT of the Year—Patsy Beavers, Oden Ridge Volunteer Fire Depart-ment; Male EMT of the Year—Brandon Hawkins, Priceville Volunteer Fire Department; Female Fire Fighter of the Year—Wanda Hunt, Bethel/Gum Pond Volunteer Fire Department; Male Fire Fighter of the Year—Michael Caudle, Bethel/Gum Pond Volun-teer Fire Department; Robert J. Miller Youth Leadership Award—Boone Livingston, Price-ville Volunteer Fire Department and Matt Segars, Somerville Area Volunteer Emergency Services; Boyce Walker Community Service Award—Kevin Worley, Priceville Volunteer Fire Department;
Fire Chief of the Year—Charles Black, Priceville Volunteer Fire Depart-ment; Most Improved Department of the Year—Talucah Volunteer Fire Department; Citizen Humanitarian Award—Robert Chumley, Robbie Stephenson and Kyle Stephenson; Award of Valor—Ray Williams, Danville Volunteer Fire Department;
A member of the Danville VFD for more than 20 years, Williams was honored for the heroism he demonstrated in the following incident:
“Williams was paged to a wreck on April 8, 2010, with possible entrapment. Upon arrival, he and fellow fire fighters found two young men who had been removed from their car before it burst into flames. They advised the fire fighters that a third person had been in the car with them, and when Williams arrived on the scene he was told that his son Tray was involved and he had not been located.
“Williams immediately grabbed the attack line from another fire fighter and began fighting the fire as he had been trained. At the time it was believed that his son was in the burning car. When it was determined that his son had been ejected, a firefighter located Willians’ son some 50 feet beyond the car. Williams ran to his son who at the time showed no signs of life, but was put on a helicopter and flown to Huntsville Hospital. Through all of this Williams was able to do what had to be done, not only for his son but for the other wreck victims as well. He remembered his training and also followed the command of fellow fire fighters when they advised him to let them handle the situation.
“The Danville VFD members are very proud of Williams for his efforts that night for it showed the strength and courage he has both as a person and a fire fighter. After months of hospitalization, we are all happy to report that Tray has made a full recovery.”
Members of Shady Grove Baptist Church will hold their Good Friday service on Friday, April 22, at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Special belated happy wedding anniversary wishes go out to Johnny and Belinda Vest. They enjoyed celebrating their 13th anniversary on April 18.
