Relay for Life began in May 1985 when a colorectal surgeon, Dr. Gordy Klatt, walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This sparked an international movement to end cancer.
Each year, more than 3.5 million people in the US, as well as 20 other countries, join in his global fight to raise money to aid in the fight against cancer.
Churches, schools, businesses or any other group or organization can form a team to raise money and meet with other participating teams to talk about rewards, upcoming dates and other important information.
This year, Hartselle’s Relay for Life has chosen the theme “Toonin’ Out Cancer.”
Participating teams choose a cartoon character, such as Sponge Bob or Bugs Bunny, to represent their team. On April 29, 2011, all of the teams will gather at J.P. Cain Stadium for Relay for Life.
