Park and Recreation Department offers something for everyone
Hartselle Parks &Recreation Department has announced plans for a wide variety of events during the upcoming fall season, as follows:
RUMMAGE SALE: Sparkman Civic Center will be the site for a semi-annual rummage sale Nov. 2-3 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sellers are needed. Indoor and outdoor spaces are available at $20 each. This is a perfect opportunity to rid your home of unwanted clutter and make a few extra dollars. For more information, contact the civic center office. The registration deadline is October 29. At least 10 sellers are needed.
DOUBLES GOLF TOURNAMENT: Every Tuesday at 6 p.m. until Daylight Savings Time begins the Disc Golf Association will sponsor a doubles tournament on the Sparkman Park Course. It is open to all levels of players. Teams are formed by placing beginning players with a more experienced player. This allows the less experienced player to learn the rules and fundamentals of the game. There is no fee to enter.
CLUB WALK-A-LAP: Join our walking club for only $5 biweekly. Walk the longest distance over a two-week period and win a $25 gift certificate from a local business.
Each member will receive a pedometer that will be dropped off at the civic center office after each walk.
Distances will be noted, pedometers cleared and picked up before your next walk. Call the civic center for more information.
AEROBICS: Beginning Thursday, Sept. 6, aerobics will be back in full swing. Classes will meet on Monday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Emily Wilbanks is the instructor. The fee is $25 per month or $5 per visit. The first class is free. Steps are provided. However, it is recommended that you bring a mat for floor exercises.
BATON: Kim's Star Twirlers will resume classes for students beginning Sept. 6. Practice times vary according to skill level. Kim-Ellis Robertson instructs this class for girls of ages 5 and up. Kim is listed in Who's Who in Baton Twirling and is a former NTBA champion with over 100 twirling awards. Students will display their talents in local parades and a recital. The registration fee is $10 and the monthly fee is $35. Private lessons are also available.
MARTIAL ARTS: Matthew Martinez is bringing a new form of Kung Fu to North Alabama. A six-year student of Jamie Hooper, he has won many awards including two state championships. He has placed first in every national tournament that he has attended.
He continues to practice martial arts because it is a lifelong journey not only for self-defense but health and the mastery of the most important thing in life-self. Students may join him in the journey on Mondays at 6 p.m. The monthly fee if $55. Private lessons are also available.
BALLET-Dale Serrano dance Studio plans tap, jazz and ballet classes on Thursday afternoons. Boys and girls of ages two and one-half ands older have the opportunity to learn from season professionals. BASKETBALL MEETING: All parents of boys and girls interested in playing youth league basketball in the upcoming season should attend a planning meeting at the civic center Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. Officers will be chosen and registration dates announced.
FAST PITCH SOFTBALL: Tom McHugh is instructing girls in softball fast pitching. To arrange for private lessons, contact him at 303-2017.
HALLOWEEN DINNER THEATER: We are currently planning a night of good food and fun at our first Halloween dinner party. "Feast with a Vampire," a play written by John Burleson of Hartselle, will be featured. Watch for further details.
DISC GOLF TOURNAMENT: The Hartselle Halloween Hoe-down Disc Golf Tournament will be held on Oct. 20. For more information, for to www.hsvdiscgolf.com.
CONCERTS: Martin Delray will be featured in concert with special guest Jeff Whitlow and the Old Barn Band on Sept. 15 at 6: 30 p.m. Advance tickets are $15 and are available at In 2 Wireless, Hartselle Flooring, Abundant Health, Charlie Alexander ALFA Insurance and Decatur Decorating. Tickets at the door will be $20. Michael Dean as Elvis will be in concert on Sept. 29. A gospel/bluegrass concert will be Oct. 29. All of these events will be in civic center gymnasium.
YOUTH DANCE: The next youth dance will be held Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
