A trailer load of bottled water and other nonperishable items was donated by Hartselle Church of Christ members and transported to Meridian and Laurel Mississippi on Thursday of last week, according to Daniel Gaines, associate minister.
"Our people had little advance notice but came though in a tremendous way," Gaines stated. "From the reports I have heard, the supplies we sent were among the first to arrive in that area and the people who received them were very appreciative. Distribution of the supplies will be coordinated by Churches of Christ in that area.
"We used our 'phone tree' to let our members know about the relief project Wednesday morning and we had enough supplies to fill a cattle trailer at our mid-week worship service that evening," he added. The donations included bottled water, coolers filled with ice and canned foods.
Church members Wayne and Betty Hicks delivered the supplies.
Gaines said donations would be accepted and transported to disaster stricken areas as long as the need is there.
"Anyone is invited to donate needed items," he added. "There is a special need for waterproof tarpaulins." Donations may be dropped off at the church office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
