A look back

By Staff
Researched by Dr. Bill Stewart
With the generally good weather at this time of year, public improvements of many different kinds make much more visible progress. These improvements don't always get unanimous backing.
1913 -May 20, A meeting was held recently in the Falkville mayor's office to hear complaints by property owners who the proposed sidewalking would affect. Sitting as a court of judgement, the mayor and council listened to numerous complaints but determined in the end that none of them were of sufficient importance to block this proposed sidewalk proposition.
1978 -May 21, Hartselle residents are mourning the death of Leonard C. Sparkman, a highly skilled painter who contributed much to the beautification of this community. Mr. Sparkman passed away recently at the age of 79.
1928 -May 22, With the coming of much better weather, Gibson &Vest, E. R. Roberts, and W. T. Stewart, progressive Hartselle merchants, are all doing a booming business.
1948 -May 23, The first project of the city park is rapidly taking shape. An army surplus barracks, constructed near the swimming pool, will be converted into a bathhouse and dressing rooms in the near future.
1907 -May 24, While still proud of our own depot, Hartselle travelers to Decatur are very favorable in their comments regarding the new union passenger station in that city which was recently completed at a cost of almost $40,000.
1910 -May 25, The property around Clear Creek Falls was purchased a while back by Dr. D. W. Day of Hartselle who recently laid off lots and started a new town, Falls City.
2002 -May 25, The Red House Grill in downtown Hartselle is acquiring a reputation as a particularly romantic dining spot.
1928 -May 26, The grounds of Morgan County High School are particularly attractive just now and are being especially well kept. The rose arbor adds just that graceful touch in the spring and summer which makes it appeal to lovers of the beautiful. The hedges are well trimmed and the lawn well cut.
1979 -May 26, Joe Berry is completing a very successful year as president of the Jaycees. The Jaycees are among Hartselle's most community-minded citizens.
