Tempers sometimes get hotter at about the same time the weather does.
1902-July 17, Word has reached Hartselle that at about 7 o'clock tonight, immediately after the close of a baseball game between Decatur and Pulaski, Robert Howard, an L &N freight conductor who is well known here, shot and perhaps fatally wounded Frank Bauer, centerfielder for the home team. Bauer is prominent in Cullman where it is said he is worth fully $50,000. Howard was arrested and is now in the Morgan County jail.
1912-July 18, Two murders have recently been reported to the office of Morgan County Sheriff Dick McCulloch. One man was stabbed in the throat and killed by his cousin at College Grove over in Lawrence County. There was also a killing on the Norton place a few miles out of Decatur.
1909-July 19, Morgan County Solicitor D. F. Green reports that at the last term of the court he tried 71 criminal cases and convicted 57 of this number, leaving only 14 acquitted.
1946-July 20, The Hartselle softball league is being formed to create wholesome entertainment and recreation for the youth of Hartselle.
1904-July 21, Cullman and Hartselle will play ball on the St. Bernard college diamond next Thursday. These are good teams and a fast, clean game is expected.
1909-July 21, Today there was an unfortunate free for all at an all-day religious meeting at a church in Lawrence County, and in the fight one of the participants was so badly injured by being struck over the head with a baseball bat that he likely will die. The dispute arose over a baseball game, which was played near the meetinghouse.
1972-July 22, Two men in a rural community outside Hartselle have been charged with growing marijuana.
1938-July 23, "Texas Trail," a "shoot-em-up" with William Boyd as Hopalong Cassidy is showing today at the Strand Theatre.
1974-July 23, Police are almost daily logging in further arrests in their current crackdown on drug sells within the Hartselle city limits.
