Bob Hope had his 100th birthday a few weeks ago. This brought back memories of many movie stars who old-timers recall seeing on the screen at the Strand Theatre.
1941-June 26, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and Dorothy Lamour opened in "Road to Zanzibar" at the Strand tonight. This feature will also be shown tomorrow.
1950-June 26, The Mars Theatre of Falkville, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Gibbons, is enjoying good patronage. Western movies are shown on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
1931-June 27, The Little Six, a girls' drama group, is currently presenting its plays at the Burleson theatre. Most recently, audiences were treated to "Zipping Daggers."
1942-June 27, Gene Autry sings "Deep in the Heart of Texas" in the thrilling western, "Heart of the Rio Grande," at the Strand.
1942-June 28, "Ride 'Em, Cowboy" with Bud Abbot and Lou Costello is now showing at the local theatre.
1967-June 28, The vacant Rodeo Theatre building on Main Street is being offered for lease.
1941-June 29, "The Wagons Roll at Night" with Humphrey Bogart is the highlight of this week's Strand schedule.
1995-June 30, Hollywood Actor Dean Jones, known for his many roles in Disney movies, is planning to come back to his home area later this summer to attend the Hartselle camp meeting. He was last here 15 years ago when he and his wife visited relatives. In addition to producing films now, Jones is also writing another book. His first book, "Under Running Laughter," tells the story of his conversion. Jones has numerous television shows, theatrical productions, and more than 30 movies to his credit.
1937-July 1, "Shall We Dance?" with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers began a two-day run at the Strand today.
1926-July 2, The Johnson jazz band is a popular addition to the pictures at the local movie theatre currently.
1969-July 2, The Ranch Drive-in Theatre is being criticized for showing allegedly obscene movies. (A week later the theatre was raided on orders of Governor Albert Brewer.)
