Bob Godsey to be new HHS head football coach

Bob Godsey is almost like a kid in a candy store when he talks about Hartselle High School.
"I'm ecstatic," Godsey said. "This is a very humbling experience."
Godsey was named the new head football coach at Hartselle High School Monday night. He replaces Mike Smith, who has taken a job in Tuscaloosa.
The 37-year old Godsey has spent the last five years at Brooks. While at Brooks, he took a team no one had hear of and made them a Class 4A power.
But his situation at Brooks then, and his situation at Hartselle now, are vastly different.
"I'm obviously not coming into a broken down program," Godsey said. "I just hope to build on the success from last year."
Godsey, a graduate of Wilson High School in Florence, took Brooks to the 2000 State Playoff Quarterfinals. He also boasted the best scoring defense in the state in 2001 and 2002, while being ranked in the top 10 in most offensive categories in 2000.
When asked the question as to what kind of offense he plans on bringing to the table in Hartselle, he didn't hesitate.
"Well, we want to reach the strength of the talent," he said. "I'm an option guy by nature, but I'm not locked in to anything particular. We'll use different styles."
Godsey also has coached at Decatur High School. With the Red Raiders, Godsey was head coach of the baseball team from 1995-1998 and an assistant football coach from 1990-1997.
"To me, the possibilities are endless here (in Hartselle)," Godsey said. "I've studied the tradition of Hartselle, not only the football team, but the school and community, too. I appreciate this opportunity."
Hartselle principal Jerry Reeves said he was impressed most by Godsey.
"He's a very impressive young coach," he said. "He's been involved in really good programs … This is someone you would want your children to play for."
Godsey said his primary focus is the kids.
"It's not about me and it's not about the other coaches," Godsey said. "It's about the kids."
