Santa may have some competition on his mittens this holiday season as one local civic group gets ready to spread some Christmas spirit.
The Falkville Lion's Club will host two funding raising events this season to benefit underprivileged families in Falkville during the Christmas holiday.
"Through these events, we are able to help 30 to 35 families with gifts of food, blankets, and Bibles," Ronnie Richards of the Falkville Lion's Club said. "We are also able to give Christmas toys to 60 to80 children. It's truly touching to see what an affect our simple gesture can have on those little ones and their families."
Richards said the Falkville Lion's Club works in conjunction with local community agencies to identify families and their specific needs. He said local business have also been generous with donations and discounts.
"With the help of the community, many families and children will have Christmas who otherwise may not have," Richards said.
"It's wonderful to share the spirit of Christmas and Christian love to those who truly need it."
Kicking off the season will be the Falkville Lion's Club annual Turkey Shoot on Highway 31 in Falkville just south of Summerford Nursing Home.
The event will be held Saturday, Nov. 16 at 8 a.m. Participants will have the opportunity to shoot for turkeys, hams and country hams.
Following the Turkey Shoot, the Falkville Lion's Club 23rd annual benefit singing will be held Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. at First Faith Church of Falkville on Culver Road.
Area church choirs will sing special music and accept love offerings to be donated to the Falkville Lion's Club.
Proceeds from both events will benefit needy families in Falkville this Christmas.
Santa Claus himself will be on hand Saturday, Dec. 21 from 4-6 p.m. at the former Woodland building on Culver Road in Falkville to distribute Christmas gifts to these families.
"It really is a special day for everyone," Richards said. "To see their faces light up is, to me, a Christmas present in itself."
