The Hartselle Area Relay for Life is just six weeks away and event coordinators are looking for more teams.

The signature event of the American Cancer Society will be held at J.P. Cain Stadium from 6 p.m April 20 to 6 a.m. on April 21.

“We’re looking for more individuals and teams who would like to help with our annual Relay for Life,” said Beth Tutwiler, Hartselle Relay event coordinator.

Tutwiler said Relay for Life was hurt by the April 27 tornado outbreak, because the event was scheduled for two days after the event.

“We didn’t have power, so we couldn’t hold the event at its regular time,” Tutwiler said. “Then once we rescheduled it, it rained on that day and we had to hold it inside at Sparkman Civic Center. We’re due for some good weather this year.”

Even with all that, the Relay event nearly made its goal, raising $127,460. Now the 2012 goal is $135,460 and 50 teams.

Sponsors who have contributed since 2006 are Gilchrist Pharmacy, Kids Kastle and Hartselle Rotary.

Teams who have participated since 2006 are Keenum Krusaders, Family Security Credit Union, Flint Church of Christ and Hartselle Church of Christ.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length. Teams of people from all walks of life have fun while raising much-needed funds to fight cancer and raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment.
