Head Start emergency finds staff on its toes

A medical emergency involving a 2-year-old boy prompted a quick response from the Hartselle Head Start staff on Nov. 30 and left his family relieved and thankful that he was OK after being examined and released at Decatur General Hospital’s emergency room.

Samuel Wallace, who will be 3 on Dec. 9, collapsed on the floor of his classroom shortly after he was dropped off by his mom. His teacher, Sequoah Bush, recognized he was in trouble when she picked him up and saw that his face was bluish in color and his eyes were rolled back in his head. She directed another teacher, Michelle Prince, to call 9-1-1.

The child was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where an examination revealed he possibly suffered from a chemical imbalance, said his grandmother, Karen Griffith.

“We’re just happy he is OK and back in school. That’s an answer to the prayers that went up from his family, teachers and parents of students,” she said.

Wallace is the son of Dillon and Destiny Wallace of Hartselle.
