Grant paves way for sewer growth

A sewer expansion project funded by a Community Development Block Grant will result in city sewage service for up to 45 Hartselle families in the near future, according to project manager Terry Acuff of Community Consultants in Huntsville.
He said the project is under contract to T.J. Construction Co. of Florence at a cost of $393,051. Of that amount, Hartselle Utilities will contribute $75,000.
Acuff said 36 families in the project area, which includes Highway 36, West, Burns Road, Shaw Road and Warren Road, have signed up to participate.
The project will consist of the installation of a series of one, two and three-inch sewer lines in street right-of-ways, feeder lines from households to the main lines and grinder pumps. Existing septic tanks will be disconnected and removed.
The work will be done at no cost to the homeowner; however, monthly sewage charges will be applicable.
In 1999, a similar project extended sewer to about 75 households in the neighborhood.
Acuff said the area was surveyed prior to application for the grant. It showed that a majority of septic tanks in service were either failing or not functioning properly.
