Funeral for Sherman Blackstone Powell, Sr., 88, was Sunday, Oct., 12, at 3 p.m. at the Falkville First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Weldon and Robert Archibald Jr. officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Burial was in Falkville City Cemetery.
Mr. Powell died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Summerford Nursing Home. He was born April 21, 1915, in Cordova, to Jasper Newton "Butler" Powell and Delia Clark Powell. Mr. Powell was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Falkville High School and went on to play football on an athletic scholarship at the University of Alabama. Upon receiving his LLB Degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1940, he established his practice in Decatur, which continued for 49 years. He was a member of the Morgan County Bar Association for 50 years, and was a former president of the Association. Mr. Powell served as the Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club Association. He served as president of the Hartselle Camp Meeting Association for 25 years and served as a lay speaker for the Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Powell shared together a marriage of 62 years, which embraced four children, nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Mr. Powell was the father of the late Nancy Carol Powell and the brother to the late Melvina Douglas, Myrtis McClanahan, Judge Newton Powell, J. N. Powell, Greer Powell and Clark Powell.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Hughes Powell of Falkville; one son, Sherman Blackstone Powell Jr. of Falkville; two daughters, Sallye Jo Powell Coggin and Virginia Sue "Ginny" Roberts Owens, both of Falkville; two sisters, Grace Jones of Decatur and Mary Lynch of Guntersville; and one brother, Miles Powell of Decatur.
Pallbearers were grandsons Sherman B. Powell III, Will Powell, Jasper Faulk, Asa Coggin, Jacob Roberts, Joshua Roberts, and Blackstone Powell. Also serving were John Glasscock, David Glasscock and Jeff Howard.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Morgan County Bar Association.
