A look back

Researched by Dr. Bill Stewart
The July 4th weekend is another appropriate time to honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
1953-July 3, Lt. Robert Stephenson will receive his honorable discharge from the service next month. He has been on active duty for two years, the past year being spent in Columbus, Miss., as an instructor in the OCS there. He and Mrs. Stephenson and daughter expect to return to Hartselle when he receives his charge.
1999-July 4, Col. Hugh H. Pattillo is ill at his home in Hartselle. Colonel Pattillo served with distinction in the Army, serving in the Korean War and doing three tours of duty in the Vietnam War as well. He is a highly decorated combat veteran, with a Silver Star and four bronze stars among numerous other military honors and citations.
1945-July 5, Jack William Hoffhaus (later editor and publisher of the Enquirer) is on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippine Islands.
1934-July 6, Adlia Sample is an increasingly prominent young businessman in Hartselle. He is also a World War veteran and a member of the county board of revenue. His marriage to Miss Claudine Leonard of Jasper is expected to occur within the next several months.
1943-July 7, Buddy Rodgers is now a second lieutenant in the Army Air Force, stationed at Craig Field in Montgomery.
1944-July 8, Arlo Thurmon Abercrombie is currently undergoing basic training as a new inductee in the U.S. Navy.
1945-July 8, Cpl. Willis Hicks of the U.S. Army is now stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C.
1945-July 9, Dr. W. H. Block anticipates a discharge in late summer from the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Upon his separation from the Corps, as a member of which he has seen extensive service in the European theatre of war, he expects to resume his practice in Hartselle with an office on Railroad Street.
1918-July 9, Forrest Breedlove is currently on the World War battlefields "somewhere in France."
