Special to the Enquirer

The Falkville Police Department, assisted by Hartselle Police Department, conducted a traffic stop on Highway 31 near Thompson Road Feb. 4 – and the stop ended with two arrests

During the course of the traffic stop, officers were given consent to search the vehicle. According t to the FPD, upon searching, officers located a backpack that contained a lock box. A passenger, Brandon Mitchell Latham, 39, of Hartselle informed officers the lock box contained drug paraphernalia and gave officers the code to open it.

Once officers opened the box, they observed drug paraphernalia and two plastic baggies containing a tan, rocklike substance.

Officers contacted agents with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Drug Enforcement Unit. Agents arrived on scene and field tested both baggies, and according to the FPD reported, they field tested positive for heroin, weighing approximately eight grams.

Agents placed Latham under arrest for trafficking in heroin. He was transported to the Morgan County Jail with a bond set at $10,000.

Michael Wayne Hitt, 35, of Hartselle was also a passenger in the vehicle. Hitt was arrested on numerous outstanding felony warrants with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.

Hitt was also transported to and booked in the Morgan County Jail, with bond pending.
