Hartselle’s Gen. “Fighting Joe” Wheeler Civil Air Patrol Squadron had the honor of raising the flag and laying a wreath at the recent birthday celebration at Wheeler’s historic Pond Spring home in Hillsboro.

The Sept. 14 celebration marked the 183rd anniversary of the Sept. 10 birth of Wheeler, a hero of the American Civil War, Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War who lived at the home until his death in 1906.

At the event, cadets form the Hartselle squadron met the great-great-granddaughter of Wheeler, Lucy Walser, who drove up from Tampa, Fla., for the event and who said she was so excited to meet cadets from the squadron named for her forefather.

Cadets presented Walser with a framed patch from the Alabama-134; she told them she had a “Joe Wheeler wall” in her home and she would proudly include it with her collection.
