F.E. Burleson Elementary School and Crestline Elementary joined schools in over 40 counties to celebrate the 16th anniversary of World School Milk Day on Wed., Sept. 30, 2015. The Food and Agriculture Organization created  World School Milk Day focusing attention on school milk with celebrations in countries around the globe highlighting the health benefits of milk on the last Wednesday in September each year. Milk in all flavors is a powerhouse beverage and a great source of natural fuel for the body – milk provides the power of protein to build muscles, calcium and vitamin D for strong bones and teeth, potassium to keep the heart healthy, along with five other important vitamins and minerals needed every day.

F. E. Burleson students, faculty, and staff were “down on the farm” as they dressed like farmers, churned butter, ran experiments with milk and learned about farm animals.

Kyle Woodard, agri-science teacher and FFA faculty sponsor at Hartselle Junior High brought the HJHS Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization to FEB to teach the students about farm animals.

There were also several farm animals brought to the school for the students including a jersey dairy cow and her calf, a goat, a ram, Shetland pony, Tennessee walking horse and chickens.

The FFA members talked with the students about each of the animals such as chickens laying eggs and getting milk from a cow and goat.

Crestline students enjoyed and colored and decorated special cow hats for milk day and several folks had milk mustaches to show their love for milk.

Members of the child nutrition staff dressed up at both schools and had several promotional items supporting the value of milk for their students.
