Dial's resolution deserves support
Editor,
"Declaring support of President George W. Bush, our allies, and the men and women of the United States armed forces."
This is the synopsis of a resolution Senator Gerald Dial, a conservative Democrat, introduced recently in the Alabama Senate in support of President George W. Bush, Prime Minister Tony Blair, and our armed forces. The resolution also criticized France.
Who was against this resolution?
On a roll call vote, all 10 Republicans and six conservative Democrats voted for the Dial resolution. Seventeen Democrats voted against the Dial resolution and defeated it by a vote of 17 to 16. Democrats Pat Lindsey and Phil Poole were not present.
The six Democrats who voted for the Dial resolution were Tom Butler, Tommy Ed Roberts, Gerald Dial, Ted Little, Wendell Mitchell, and Jimmy Holley.
Democrats Lowell Barron, Roger Bedford, Bobby Denton, Jeff Enfinger, Sundra Escott, Vivian Figures, Zeb Little, E. B. McClain, Larry Means, Hinton Mitchem, Myron Penn, Jim Preuitt, Quinton Ross, Jr., Hank Sanders, Rodger Smitherman, Charles Steele, Jr., and Gary Tanner voted against the Dial resolution.
Senators Hinton Mitchem and Roger Bedford introduced a resolution "declaring support of our men and women of the United States armed forces."
Although the 10 Republicans and six conservative Democrats would obviously have preferred a stronger resolution, the weaker Mitchem/Bedford resolution was adopted unanimously by a vote of 33 to 0. Lindsey and Poole were not present.
I like the stronger Dial resolution. How about you?
