Lady Tigers defeat Brewer in Class 5A regional opener

HUNTSVILLE – Rain disrupted play in the Class 5A North Regional in Huntsville for more than an hour on Friday, but it didn’t stop Hartselle from taking care of business against a spunky Brewer team .

The Lady Tigers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on the strength Ali Forth’s two-run single in the bottom of the second inning. They added a Jada Hayes sacrifice RBI in the third and Taylor Wascavage’s 12th home run of the season to take a 4-0.

The Lady Patriots scored three runs in the sixth to cut Hartselle’s lead to 4-3. Anna Sharp plated the first run on an RBI single. Morgan Thomas reached on an error, allowing Taylor Ledbetter to score. Sharp then came home on a wild pitch.

Wascavage added another RBI and finished 2-for-4 the game. Jada Hayes and Hannah Jenkins hit sacrifice fly balls to score two more runs. Hayes reached first base, however, after an outfield error.

Forth added her third RBI on a single, as she finished 2-for-3. Hannah Jenkins was 2-for-2 and Sarah Ellen Battles finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Sydnee Wiley and Ashley Boggs added hits.

Hayes was the winning pitcher. She allowed three runs on five hits while striking out six batters, walking one and hitting two.

Bailey Watkins paced Brewer with a 2-for-4 effort. Kayla Roberts and Morgan Childers also singled.

Morgan Wilson allowed eight runs on 10 hits while striking out one batter and walking one. Three of the runs were unearned.

Southside-Gadsden 12, Brewer 0
