Former State Sen. Tommy Ed Roberts of Hartselle has died. He was 73.

Roberts represented Morgan, Limestone and Madison Counties in the Third Senate District from 1994 to 2006. He was succeeded by Arthur Orr.

Roberts was previously the president and CEO of the Decatur-Morgan County Economic Development Association and the Decatur-Morgan Port Authority.

Roberts served for over 10 years in the U.S. Army Reserve and the Alabama National Guard. He attended Jacksonville State University and completed American Economic Development Council courses at Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Oklahoma. He is a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pat Hogan Roberts; a son: Andy Roberts (Cindy) of Hartselle; a daughter, Stacey Roberts Wade (Dr. Freddie) of Franklin, Tenn.; a step-mother, Mabel Roberts of Abilene, Texas; a sister, Edna Carol Weeks (Jerry) of Hartselle; a brother-in-law, Mike Hogan (Becky) of Decatur; a sister-in-law, Gaylia W. Roberts of Huntsville; and six grandchildren.

Funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Hartselle with the Revs. Robert Sparkman, Bobby Ray Halbrooks and Harold Sparkman officiating.

Burial will be at the Hartselle City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church.

He was born Oct. 19, 1940 in Morgan County to Luther E. Roberts and Katherine Hewlett Roberts.

Mr. Roberts was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Hartselle. He joined the church as a young boy. His grandfather, Rev. Roy Hewlett, was the minister of the church at the time. Early in his career Mr. Roberts and his family owned and operated Roberts’ Men’s Wear in Decatur.
