LETTER: Congratulations Burleson School

Dear Editor,

I have had the pleasure of working at F.E. Burleson for over 20 years. What has been constant throughout that time is the never ending caring support the faculty and staff give to all students.

Sherry Calvert, the current principal, is a visionary and has been instrumental in leading the school forward and facilitating the creation of an educational environment to enhance student learning. Since she has been the principal, F. E. Burleson has been recognized for many accomplishments.

The most recent recognition is from the Alabama State Department that recognized F. E. Burleson as a 2014 Green Ribbon School. Brent Maze wrote a wonderful article about the school’s most recent award. I know that faculty, staff and students worked together to earn this award. I also know that Debbie Queen was a key facilitator in this project and in submitting an application complete with pictures to the Alabama State Department. She is the chairperson of the Science and Outdoor Classroom Team that includes: Beverly Waldrop, Sally Woodall, Mary McClanahan, Sarah Bragwell, Yulanda Hampton and Katie Davis. This team synergizes to sustain and enhance the school’s Outdoor Classroom as well as design learning experiences with an emphasis on embracing the responsibility for our planet and its resources.
