Godsey joins 100-win club

Hartselle coach Bob Godsey has done something very few football coaches have done – win 100 times with the same school.

On Friday night, Godsey picked up his 100th coaching win with his team’s 27-0 victory against Russellville.

After the game, you could tell that Godsey really doesn’t worry too much about his personal achievements. Instead, he attributed that benchmark to his players in the past.

“This represents a lot of players, coaches, parents and everyone who helped contribute to this program,” Godsey said.

The only coach who has more wins at Hartselle is legendary coach Don Woods, who finished his 16-year tenure with a 137-64 record.

Godsey has built on that success in the past and now boasts a 100-34, including a 17-8 record in the playoffs. He also has a 62-15 region record.

That all culminated in the 2011 state championship season, a state championship team that didn’t have a single Division 1 college recruit.

Sportswriters across the state took notice during that season. They were amazed at how hard the Tigers were playing each night and against teams that were bigger, faster and more talented.

However, you can’t underestimate the heart of Godsey and the Hartselle Tigers. He and his staff push the players to do their very best, sometimes even beyond what the players believe they can do.

In the three seasons that I have been here, there’s never been one time that I have questioned the effort that Hartselle gives every week. And you can attribute a lot of that Godsey himself.

The reason why his kids try so hard for him is that he gives his best every week. He gives his total effort in everything he does.

Even when he has to pull them aside and correct them, he still has their best interests in mind.

I would like to applaud the effort of Godsey, his staff and all of the Hartselle players that have come through the program. They all share in this achievement.

I hope we will get to see Godsey and the Tigers win 100 more.
