Virginia Glasscock Hansen

January 14, 2013

Cilla Virginia Glasscock Hansen of Matthews, N.C., died Jan. 14, 2013.

She was born to Rachel Drucilla Harris Quinn Glasscock and Ulysses Yancy Glasscock in 1926 and raised in Hartselle. She was among the first female graduates of Auburn University’s School of Pharmacy in 1948. She did not have a prejudicial bone in her body and raised her children to be accepting of all humankind. She was intellectually curious, an advocate of proper language usage and technically capable in aspects of design and construction. She also enjoyed cooking for her family and, true to her Southern roots, was fabulous at it. Her favorite pastimes included listening to jazz, gardening and playing tennis.

She is survived by her husband, Emil Hansen; her daughter, Drucilla Jarrett; her stepdaughter Beth Hansen-Winter; two sons, Gordon and Matthew Hansen; and five grandchildren, Kelsey, Berit, Kiese, Christian and Kjell Hansen. Much of what is good in us came from her.

Per her wishes, her body has been donated to research and education programs at Duke University.

In lieu of flowers, please give to Duke University’s Bryan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, which can be reached at 866-444-2372.

Online condolences may be left to www.heritagefuneral.net.

The Hansen family is in the care of Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington/Matthews Chapel.
