Maybe, just maybe, Brewer grew up a little bit last Friday night. Playing on the road at West Morgan, Brewer made a game out of it for a half. But at the end it was another frustrating and painful night as the Patriots fell 42-0. Brewer is now 0-5 while West Morgan is 5-0.
Making matters worse for Brewer, junior starting linebacker Josh Cavender was lost after breaking the fibula in his left leg in the first quarter. West Morgan standout defensive tackle Wesley Henderson tore the plantar fascia in his left foot during warm-ups and left the game after one series with a noticeable limp.
It marked the third straight shutout loss for Brewer. "I've been on both sides and right now it's not a lot of fun," veteran coach Robert Peppers said. "I hate it for the kids that we can't score, but we're going to keep throwing the football. That is the only thing we have confidence in right now. West Morgan has a good football team and no I don't think they tried to run up the score."
What West Morgan did do was roll up 517 yards rushing led by Eric Gray's 210 yards on 12 carries. He had touchdown runs of 1, 55, and 44 yards all in the pivotal third quarter.
The Rebels other speedy back Richard Moseley scored the games first points on a 72 yard run with 6:34 left in the first quarter. Tony Parise recovered a fumble by Eric Gray on the Brewer 8 yard line to end a threat. Moseley hit pay dirt again at 9:38 in the second on a 62-yard run but a second missed extra point left the score 12-0. Another scoring threat ended when Brewer's Josh Moreland stopped West Morgan quarterback Chuck Thorn on fourth down. A penalty had nullified a Thorn touchdown on the series.
With five minutes left in the second quarter Brewer still hadn't recorded a first down, but that would soon change.
