CULLMAN - Hartselle’s Lady Tigers claimed victories in three of four games before being eliminated by Corner in the semifinal round of the Cullman Pre-State Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
Pell City scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and a single run in the fifth to advance to the championship game. Hartselle left six batters stranded and let scoring opportunities slip away in the first, fourth and fifth innings.
Hitters for the Lady Tigers were Alex Paulson, Katie Gentle, Michel Fields and Anna Hall each with a single.
Meaghan Gray pitched four innings and was credited with the loss. She allowed three runs on two hits while striking out two, walking one and hitting a batter. Breanna Riley pitched one inning in relief. She didn’t allow a hit and struck out two.
Hartselle 2, Cullman 0
Hartselle’s Lady Tigers scored single runs in the first and fifth innings and went on to defeat` Cullman 2-0 in the second round of tournament play on Saturday.
Lang, Fields and Anna Hall each singled for Hartselle’s only hits.
Gray was credited with the shutout win. She pitched all five innings and allowed two hits while striking out seven and walking two.
Hartselle 2, LCHS 1
Hartselle’s Lady Tigers scored two runs in the second inning and held on to defeat Lawrence County 2-1.
Both of Hartselle’s runs came on the strength of a leadoff single by Fields and a home run by Ashley Bonner. The Lady Tigers had three more hits, a single each by Chandler Orr, Alex Paulsen and Hall.
Riley was the winning pitcher. She gave up one run on three hits. She struck out eight.
Pell City 1, Hartselle 0
Pell City scored a run in the third inning on the strength of a walk and a single and went on to defeat Hartselle 1-0 in a pool game.
The Lady Tigers had only three hits, a pair of singles by Lang and a single by Chandler.
Riley pitched four innings and was tagged with the loss. She allowed only two hits while striking out two.
Hartselle 11, Haleyville 1
Hartselle opened pool play by blasting Haleyville 11-1.
They pushed across four runs in the first inning, two each in the second and fourth and three in the third. Haleyville’s only run was unearned and came in the first.
Leading a 14-hit attack for Hartselle was Audrey McClanahan with a double and a pair of singles. Fields had three singles, Chandler and Kimmie Minor each had a pair for singles and Hall, Bonner, Paulsen and Lang each singled.
Meaghan Gray pitched all four innings and got credit for the win. She allowed one run on two hits while striking out four and walking three.
