April 3, 1958-The new Hartselle east elementary school will be built by J. E. Johnson Co. of Decatur. His firm’s bid was the lowest to construct the facility which will originally consist of six rooms. The cost to erect will be about $68,000.
April 3, 1958-MCHS student Mary Orr won $100 for her essay submitted for the “What Industry Means to Alabama” contest. Student papers were judged today and Mary’s was found to be excellent in every respect. Other awardees from MCHS were Lee Block and Jean Howell.
April 4, 1958-Rev. Junior Hill has a weekend revival in progress at Bethel Baptist.
April 4, 1958-Even though the election is still several weeks away, people who want to participate and aren’t registered must come to the courthouse on either April 7 or April 21. The mandatory poll tax must already have been paid. These requirements obviously discourage a lot of people from voting.
April 5, 1958-A tornado struck the Falkville-Eva area of Morgan County today. Communities most affected were Greasy Cove, Cold Springs, Lawrence Cove, Florette, and Union Hill. Fortunately there were no casualties although there was extensive property damage, especially to chicken houses.
April 5, 1958-J. L. Kyle has added a room and carport to his house on Hickory Street.
April 6, 1958-Bob Orr has received a Fulbright scholarship that will send him to the University of Leeds, England, next fall for graduate study. Bob is the son of Harold and Evelyn Orr and has won many academic awards dating from his MCHS days.
April 6, 1958-Marvin Griffin passed away at his residence on Hartselle 1 tonight. Funeral services will be held at Hartselle First Methodist on Wednesday. Mr. Griffin was a prominent builder.
April 6, 1958-Hartselle Chevy dealer Bill Stewart has opened a campaign office for gubernatorial candidate George Wallace in the old city hall building. Soft drinks will be available to those who visit the HQ. While relaxing, voters can listen to tapes of Wallace speeches.
April 7, 1958-Rev. D. C. Prince spoke to Hartselle Rotarians at noon today on the subject of “Service Above Self.”
April 8, 1958-The University Hospital in Birmingham, several physicians at which have strong Hartselle ties, once again ranks among the top 30 general hospitals in the U.S.
April 9, 1958-Dr. Frank A. Rose was inaugurated as the 20th president of the University of Alabama today at Denny Stadium. Local students say the ceremonies were very impressive.
