Nine qualify for Somerville election

Nine candidates qualified for mayor and town council positions subject to Somerville’s municipal Election on Aug. 28; however, only three of the six offices have opposition.

Incumbent Mayor Darren Tucker and longtime council member Rodger McClure are locked in a battle for the mayor’s office.

Tucker gave up his seat on the council to become mayor in 2010 after then-Mayor Ray Long was elected chairman of the Morgan County Commission.

Incumbent council members Shenna Dugger (Place 1), Tammy Frye (Place 2) and Jackie Teague (Place 5) retained their seats after they survived the qualifying process without opposition.

Seeking McClure’s seat on the council are Carl Flemons and Chris Hayes, both political newcomers.

Michael Rea and Timothy Walker are running for Place 3 on the council. The position is currently filled by Joe Rogers who opted not to seek reelection.
