Falkville Head Coach Joel Schrenk said he didn’t necessarily expect the season to be so successful, but was optimistic that ‘these things could happen.’

Now 8-0, 5-0 in region play, the Blue Devils recently moved up after their stellar performance against Coosa Christian at Home 70-41 from ninth to eighth in the 1A classification.

“I knew that we had a chance to be special because we have so many weapons and the records that have been broken and set are just a tribute to the players and how hard they have worked,” Schrenk said.

Falkville will be off Oct. 19 for their bye week, for what Schrenk said is a week to further their preparation for their next big challenge.

“This week our goal is to get rested and heal some bruises,” Schrenk said. “We had a normal Monday, film, run, lift. Tuesday, we planned to go out, but the weather got us. So, we watched Dr. Elko, it was a good speech to hear, lots of great information, but low key and entertaining.”

Currently on the leaderboard: Aaron Doce has thrown for 118/172 at 2060 yards for 31 touchdowns and three interceptions at a 68.6 percent passing efficiency.

Per rushing, Fred Walls is the guy with 1157 rushing yards on 97 carries, with 20 touchdowns and one fumble.

On the receiving side, there are three guys making a big impact through the air: Noah Holmes, Christian Angulo, and Mikell Philyaw.

Holmes has grabbed 743 receiving yards on 35 catches and 12 touchdowns. Angulo also has 35 catches but with 702 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. Philyaw has 33 grabs for 452 yards and four touchdowns.

Defensively, Luke Fitzgerald leads the pack with 77 tackles and three sacks.

Carlos Esquivel is second with 71, and Jacob Holladay-who has only played in six games- with 64.

“I’m extremely proud of our O-Line. They have done a tremendous job which has made the skill guys look great,” Schrenk said. “Trustin Pylate and James Garner on defense are great leaders. On Offense, Aaron and Noah lead by example.

I congratulated the players on being recognized across the state and that it is a big deal.

Then I told them them it has nothing to do with anything that happens in a game, except that the target on our back is bigger and brighter.”

Their next season region game will be on the road at Gaylesville Oct.26 at 7 p.m.

“We just have to keep doing what we have been doing; We will make a few tweaks and wrinkles, but nothing big,” Schrenk said. “On defense we have to go back to tackling better and training our eyes. We have gotten a little lax on our individual responsibilities. It is fixable. We should have everyone back and healthy except Brock White, of course.”
