Possible E. Coli and Salmonella outbreak in Morgan County

Another news source said 2 of 19 cases of gastrointestinal illnesses at local hospitals has been confirmed positive for E. Coli, Salmonella or both.

A possible foodborne outbreak is being investigated by the State Health Department.

Several of the people with gastrointestinal illnesses had eaten a catered chicken meal at a Morgan County church May 30.

Symptoms of Salmonella can occur 6-72 hours after consumption.

According to Dr. Karen Landers, Assistant State Health Officer, people can reduce their risk of salmonella by avoiding raw or undercooked eggs and meats. Produce should be thoroughly washed, and raw food should be kept away from cooked food. People should also wash their hands after coming in contact with animals and animal feces.

This possible outbreak in Morgan County follows a similar outbreak in Franklin County. The Bureau of Clinical Laboratories has confirmed 14 cases of Salmonella in Russellville. Three people reported gastrointestinal issues after eating food at El Patron restaurant in Russellville June 4 and 5. None of them were hospitalized, but El Patron is closed as of June 20.
