COLUMN: Rolling in the awards

I agree with School Superintendent Dr. Vic Wilson.

The rest of Hartselle City Schools has their work cut out for them to top F.E. Burleson Elementary’s school board presentation on Monday night.

The students put on an awesome program, highlighted by the students singing a song about its Leader in Me program, which was a spoof on Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”

It’s amazing to me to see how well our students in Hartselle and the surrounding area are doing. At F.E. Burleson, nearly three quarters of all of the second graders have benchmarked for the new common core math standards. A majority of the students in each of the other grades have also achieved benchmarks in both reading and math.

Principal Sherry Calvert said it’s unusual for a school to perform better in math than in reading. She attributed to the fact that the school has already been using the common core standards in math and will be using the reading standards this year.

The school also enjoys success from its Leader in Me program. Teachers and students have told me in the past that this program has made an immediate impact on the school.

In fact, the students are beginning to use terminology of the teamwork aspects taught from in the book “The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People.”

It’s no wonder why FEB and other schools in the district are Blue Ribbon Lighthouse Schools.

It’s also the reason why Dr. Wilson handed out so many recognitions of students during the meeting as well.

I can’t wait to see what other things the other five schools have to show off to the school board and how they do their presentations.

It will be a fun year of covering school board meetings.
