County schools offer slots for pre-k classes

The Morgan County School System is taking applications for pre-k enrollment at Lacey’s Spring, Eva and Falkville Elementary schools as part of the State Office of School Readiness (OSR) Pre-K Program.

“This is great news,” Morgan County Schools Superintendent Bill Hopkins Jr. told board members at a regular meeting Thursday night. “To have pre-k classes in session at three of our elementary schools when school starts next month is tremendous.

“It’s a great start for those children. Our wish is that eventually we’ll have pre-k classes at all of our elementary schools.”

Applications are being accepted at each elementary school in the system as well as the central office. The deadline is Wed., July 31. A random selection will be conducted at the central office and the Head Start central office Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. to determine placement in the classes.

Hopkins said the class at Lacey’s Spring is being funded by a $120,000 state grant with the school system providing transportation as a local match. He added that of the 18 students in each class, five would be determined by family income level.

The classes at Falkville and Eva are being funded through the Head Start Program.

The three school systems in Morgan County partnered with each other to achieve the pre-k funding. They also worked in cooperation with the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce, State Rep. Terri Collins, R-Decatur, Quality Education Com-mittee Chairman Chuck Ord, Decatur-Morgan County Minority Develop-ment Association, United Way of Morgan County and Community Action Partnership of North Alabama.
