Master Gardeners gearing up for busy spring season

John Muir, a Scottish American naturalist and preservationist of the last century said, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.”

The Morgan County Master Gardeners strive to connect with our community in a meaningful way. Our projects aim to share horticultural information, experiences and opportunities with those in Morgan County and the surrounding area.

Our upcoming plant sale on April 20-21 at the Morgan County Fairgrounds will be an example of this mission. The sale is from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. on Sunday, It will offer many varieties of plants such as Japanese Maple, Butterfly Bush, Mexican Heather, Shasta Daisy, Russian Sage, Yarrow, various Coreopsis, Hardy Ferns, Geraniums, and more.

Master Gardeners will be on site to help with locating plants, answering questions and giving advice. There will also be a small collection of vendors with garden-related items, such as birdhouses, birdfeeders and wind chimes. Profits from the plant sale fund some of our projects and an annual contribution to the AMGA Endowment Scholarship at Auburn University.

Our volunteers are available to speak at garden clubs, schools or other organizations interested in gardening information. We have provided landscaping assistance for Habitat, flowers for Hospice patients and worked with educators on outdoor classrooms for several area schools.

We are looking forward to a change after the plant sale when we will begin operating from our new greenhouse at the Morgan County Fairgrounds. Members are working each week to complete this project. This location will be more centrally located and provide more teaching opportunities for the community.
