More than 100 people enjoyed a home-prepared Thanksgiving meal and received a bag of non-perishable food items on Saturday thanks to the generosity of several Somerville families.

A traditional Thanks-giving dinner—roasted turkey, baked ham and all the trimmings—was prepared in the kitchens of participating families and brought to the old courthouse where it was served on a first-come-first served basis. Eat-in and carryout accommodations were provided.

In addition, each person who came for a meal received a bag of non-perishable food items consisting of canned vegetables, cake mix, macaroni and cheese and a frozen chicken.

“This is our third year to provide a hot meal and take-home food items for people in our community at Thanksgiving,” said Agape Ministries pastor Marvin Pinchon. “We open it up to everybody. Last year, we fed over 75 people here at the courthouse and took food to over 30 who were confined to their homes.

Two Christian organizations – one for women and one for men – got it started and keep it going,” he stated. “The women tell us men what they need us to do and we do it.”

“Support and help also comes from other families and businesses in the community, he pointed out. “We’ll have 25 to 30 volunteers helping here today.”

Among those served dinner were 13 members of the Somerville Senior Center.

“We do this out of the goodness of our hearts to show love for those around us in need,”

said Edna Sue Gibson,” a member of the Women’s Christian Organization. “I was one of six women who helped get it started and I’m so glad that it’s still going and growing each year.”
