Nail, Stanley extend lead at championship

Suzanne Stanley of Decatur and Hartselle’s Heather Nail are in danger of running away from the field in the fifth annual Women’s State Four Ball Championship at Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club in Killen.

Leading by three after a first round 66, they added a second round 64 for a 14-under-par total of 130 and a seven-shot lead over Birmingham’s Kathy Hartwiger and McCalla’s Leah Green, who shot 70-67–137.

Former Mississippi State golfer Stanley and Nail had eight birdies (Nos. 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 13 and 14) to continue to pad their lead, but ten-time State Amateur champion Hartwiger, who was on the winning team in the first three championships, is paired up with Green. In 2008 she won this title with Missy Gooden of Trussville and then in 2009 and ’10 with Green.

Last year Linda Jeffery of Millbrook paired up with Green to win. This year she is teamed with Pelham’s Lindsay Grant and they are third after rounds of 69-70–139.

Lucie King and Amy McGohon, both from Tuscaloosa, are the only other team to break par, shooting 71-69–140.

This Alabama Golf Association championship features 54 holes of best ball, with play concluding on Friday. The leaders will tee off No. 1 at 9:50.
