Yellow Dot is calling
“The “Yellow Dot” Program has finally made its way into Morgan County, as a cooperative effort involving police officers, fire departments, emergency medical services, sheriff’s deputies and State Troopers.
The program, first introduced in Connecticut 10 years ago and picked up in Alabama as a pilot program in 2009 is a win-win for both rapid responders and accident victims. It is funded by a federal/state grant and is free to the public.
The aim of the program is to ensure that the rapid responder has the information he or she needs to assist the victim of a motor vehicle accident. It can save valuable time and even lives by improving communication at a time when the accident victim or victims may not be able to communicate for themselves.
Yellow Dot participants have their picture taken, complete a personal information form and receive a Yellow Dot decal to place on the lower left corner of their vehicle’s rear window. The personal information form, with attached photo, will be placed in a yellow folder and stored in the dash compartment of the vehicle. The decal alerts first responders that pertinent medical information can be found in the glove compartment. If needed, he or she will use this information to identify the accident victim, get in touch with family or emergency contacts and ensure that the person’s current medications, allergies and pre-existing medical conditions are considered when treatment is administered for injuries.
Permanent Yellow Dot enrollment locations are: Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Decatur Police Department, Hartselle Fire Station #1, Falkville Town Hall, Priceville Town Hall, Somerville Town Hall and Trinity Town Hall.
All of the groundwork is in place to provide a valuable service to traffic accident victims and those who respond to their needs. But all is for naught unless there is a ground swell of public response. The more people who take the time and make the effort to sign up for the “Yellow Dot” Program, the greater its benefits will be. Please sign up today.
