Camp opens minds

Keeping active kids with something constructive to do during summer vacation is easier said that done, especially when you consider how easy it is for them to sleep late, play games on their smart phones or watch hour after hour of TV programming.

A group of Hartselle artisans discovered a good way to do that seven years ago when they started Camp `Artselle for children entering first through fifth grade. The idea was to offer them a hands-on, fun-filled way to develop skills in art, drama, music and dance. The results have been amazing.

The camp, now in its seventh year, continues to attract more kids than the number of spaces available at Hartselle Fine Arts Center.

Professional instruction is provided in all of the disciplines, and some of the kids who attended the first Camp `Artselle are now serving as staff volunteers. Some of them are also participating in “After Hours,” an afternoon art camp for teenagers, which was started this year.

Instructors express surprise at how quickly youngsters demonstrate self-confidence after their first two or three days at camp. Likewise, parents see improvement in the way their kids relate to other kids and are able to express their thoughts in public.”

Hartselle is fortunate to have the fine arts center and the professional artists who are willing to volunteer their time to help children grow in the arts.
