An attic fire fanned by a southerly breeze caused extensive damage to the home of Andy and Cindy Roberts at the corner of Short and Oak Lane in Hartselle Friday morning.

Hartselle Fire Chief Steve Shelton said the attic of the one-story brick home was fully engulfed in flames when fire fighters arrived at approximately 10 a.m. They were still on the scene at noon.

“It looks like the fire started somewhere in the southeast part of the house,” he said, “but we don’t know the cause. That won’t be determined until the investigation is completed.”

Shelton said the city’s two engine companies and aerial truck were used to fight the blaze. In addition, backup help came from Oak Ridge, Somerville, Flint and Falkville volunteer fire departments. Falkville firefighters responded to a grass fire while standing by to answer calls coming from within the city limits.
