Funeral for Newton Columbus Thrasher, 80, of Decatur was Saturday, August 6, at 2 p.m. at Rideout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with Gary Patton officiating.
Burial was at Forrest Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Thrasher died Thursday, August 4, 2005, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born February 14, 1925, the oldest of five children born to Newton Columbus and Clara Pickens Thrasher Sr. He resided in Hartselle and Decatur his entire life. Just prior to graduating from high school he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served as an aviation metalsmith in Adak, Alaska, repairing aircraft that were involved in battle in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he returned to complete high school and then trade school as a refrigeration mechanic. He was a patriotic American who proudly displayed the flag every day. After his retirement from Central Bank, his interests included church activities, spending time with family, aviation, and computers.
He was a faithful member of the Somerville Road Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Collier Thrasher; and four sons, Thomas N. (Jerretta) Thrasher, Daniel L. (Pam) Thrasher, and Bill Thrasher, all of Decatur and David L. (Theresa) Thrasher of Hartselle. He is also survived by one sister, Louise Holloway, of Decatur, and two brothers, Larry Thrasher, of Hartselle and Doug Thrasher of Huntsville. Other survivors include eight grandchildren, Tommy (Quinta) Thrasher, Daniel (Christina) Thrasher, Chris Thrasher, Ben Thrasher, Leah Thrasher, Jon Thrasher, Anna Thrasher and Sarah Thrasher; five great-grandchildren, Andrew, Cameron, Luke and Gabrielle Thrasher and Colton Collier; and seven nieces and nephews. Newton was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Jack Thrasher.
Pallbearers were grandsons and family friends.
