Farther along in my column I wrote about Lawrence Cove Baptist Church. While I was writing this column I thought about the history of this little church.

John Drinkard and Cynthia Kyle Drinkard settled in Lawrence Cove around 1828. They had six children. Their son, Samuel David, married Dorcas Frost and they had eight children. In 1884 Lawrence Cove Church was established on land donated by Samuel and Dorcas. They were charter members. This little church has a long and interesting history.

John Drinkard owned a large portion of land there. Some of his descendents still own the land and live there.

There are also different stories of how the cemetery got started. I’m not positive which one is correct. Supposedly the first person buried there was a man who was hung for some crime. Then a family named Lawrence was traveling through there and all died of a fever and are buried there. When you do research around here especially about Lawrence Cove and John and Cynthia Drinkard you find their descendents in the Drinkards, Childers, Frost, Livingston, Turner and others. You see John and Cynthia Drinkard were my great-great-great grandparents.

I love studying the history of our ancestors, county and state and it’s good to know that our people helped make it what it is today.

Our family enjoyed a picnic at Huskey Park on Sunday afternoon to celebrate our little great-granddaughter Lonnie Kate’s fourth birthday. She belongs to Lisha and Jarred Hudson. Teresa and Dwight Kinney are her grandparents. Although the weather was so hot, it was pretty pleasant with a breeze coming through the pavilion.

Lawrence Cove Church enjoyed fifth Sunday dinner and a great singing afterwards. New Vision from Huntsville was the guest singers and they were very good.

The seniors from Eva Senior Center enjoyed a trip to Oneonta last Wednesday. They enjoyed touring the Palisades Park and enjoyed a great dinner at Charlie B’s Southern Restaurant.

We were glad to hear Hubert and Ruby Oden are doing O.K. They enjoyed the activities at Oden Ridge Baptist Church. Their nephews, Bobby Beavers and his friends Junior Waddell and David Tanner, all caught lots of fish and decided to have a fish fry at Oden Ridge Baptist Church on Saturday evening. They also served chicken. Pat said they had around 65 or 70 people and everyone had a great time and enjoyed the delicious food. Talk about five loaves and three fishes!

Pat and Bobby Beavers enjoyed visiting their daughter, Jennifer and husband Tony Hill, in Tenn. over the weekend.

Ruby Oden’s family, the Coles, is having their reunion this weekend. It will be at the Good Hope fire hall. Ruby has a sister Lois Morgan and her husband Frank and lots of nieces and nephews.

We have several prayer requests this week. Steve Douthit has terminal cancer. Pray for this family. This is my little great-grandchildren’s grandfather. Also George Lindsey, a great friend and cousin, has lung cancer. The doctors says it’s terminal. Please lift these men and their families up in prayer.
