Mental health services come to Hartselle

Capstone Medical Resources will soon be taking up residence in the old North Alabama Psychiatric Building off Highway 31 in Hartselle.

Capstone is a mental health facility that will offer therapy sessions for children and families in the area.

Bradford Carpenter, vice president of operations for Capstone, said the Hartselle office is set to have a grand opening Aug. 6. “We have 11 offices in Alabama, and our mission is to reach out to under-served areas, typically in smaller rural areas,” Carpenter said. “We provide clinical services to children and families.”

According to alabamapublichealth.gov, mental health and substance abuse rank as the second leading health concern in the state. In similar findings, mentalhealthamerica.net reports that “one in five adults have a mental health condition” and “56 percent of Americans with a condition do not receive treatment.”

Other findings concluded that depression in youth increased from 5.9 percent in 2012 to 8.2 percent in 2015.

Carpenter said the mission of Capstone is to help with the rising mental health issues.

“I think in general, as a country, we are experiencing a mental health crisis,” Carpenter said. “I think it is more important than ever to reach out to small communities and offer help and resources.”

Carpenter said Capstone works with children who have ADD/ADHD, depression, anxiety or just need to talk or are having issues in school. “About 90 percent of patients fall into the 5-19 age group, but we see adults as well,” Carpenter said.

Although Capstone will not open until August, appointments can be made by calling 205-305-6018. The office location is at 1633 Highway 31 NW, Hartselle, AL 35640.
