The Morgan County Cattlemen’s Association conducted its annual banquet at Hartselle High School Jan. 13.

Two cattlemen were honored as Cattlemen of the Year for 2017: Brenda Bowers of Lacey’s Spring and Jerry Junkins of Falkville.

When talking with Bowers, many would agree it does not take long to recognize her passion for cattle farming. According to the Cattlemen’s Association, she knows and applies the best practices and efficient uses of chemicals, pesticides and organic and commercial fertilizer. Whether discussing equipment capability and cost of maintenance, rotational grazing or use of farm chemicals that will increase profits, she is on top of her game.

While men generally receive the majority of credit for cattle farming, women in this industry are often overlooked, the Cattlemen’s Association pointed out. Her commitment to the cattle industry is recognized with this year’s award. Chris Burgess presented the award.

Junkins started raising cattle with his brother. He had to tell his brother to quit naming the cows because they were going to end up in the freezer. As most cattlemen, Jerry worked a public job to support his farming operation. Some of his mentors were Howe Sibley, Johnny Rowe and Mark Summerford. He was recruited into the cattlemen by a former president, the late Larry Buckelew.

Not only can he raise cattle, he uses his green thumb skills to provide the Cattlemen Association’s cook team with green peppers used in making their steak sandwiches.

The Morgan County Cattlemen of the Year award recognizes successful individual cattle growers for having mastered the skill of raising quality cattle while demonstrating excellent stewardship over both the animals and the land in their care.
In attendance were Jack Batts, president-elect of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, and local officials Sen. Author Orr and Chairman Ray Long.

The Cattlemen used the banquet as an opportunity to recognize outgoing and incoming officers, in addition to announcing the Cattlemen of the Year. The outgoing president Alan Walker introduced the 2018 president, Terry Wallace, and incoming vice president, Ray Ward.
