Hartselle volleyball grabs two area wins

The Hartselle Tigers volleyball team has had some growing pains to start this season as they adjust to losing seven seniors from last year. Still, the Tigers got off to a big start in area play with two area wins last week.

Hartselle 3, Columbia 0; Hartselle 2, Athens: 0

Hartselle took a win over Columbia 3-0 (25-17, 25-12 and 25-12) and over Athens 2-0 (25-17, 25-21). Hailey Holshouser led the Tigers with 15 digs, 11 kills and three aces. Karmyn Key finished with 38 assists to go along with five kills and three aces.

Hartselle 3, Austin 2. Hartselle 2, Guntersville 1

The Tigers took their second area win over Austin 3-2 (25-10, 25-18, 16-26, 22-25 and 15-7) and got a win over Guntersville (19-25, 25-22 and 15-13). Key finished with 58 assists, while Lexie Smith had 20 kills and 14 digs. Abby Arias had 19 digs.

Hartselle has rough time at Ironman tournament

Hartselle competed in the 2017 Ironman invitational in Huntsville. The Tigers lost their first match to Bob Jones 0-2 (14-25, 9-25). Hartselle also lost to Mountain Brook 0-2 (15-25, 10-25), Thompson 0-2 )18-25, 26-28), Hazel Green 0-2 (12-25, 14-25) and again to Mountain Brook 0-2 (13-25, 17-25). The Tigers defeated Grissom 2-0 (25-22, 25-17).

Holshouser finished the tournament with 48 digs and 23 kills. Smith had 22 digs and 26 kills. Katie Harris finished with 19 digs, while Key had 72 assists.

Hartselle is currently 6-9.
