Miller performs well during North-South game

Hartselle’s Waid Miller finished with five tackles and had several assists in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s North-South football game Thursday night at the Cramton Bowl.

The competitive game went down to the wire, as the South held on for a 20-12 victor over the North.

“We had a few early mistakes that cost us at the beginning,” Miller said. “I thought I played a good game. It was a great experience.”

Miller said he didn’t know many players heading into the camp.

“I knew a few of them from some of the collegiate camps that I’ve been too,” Miller said. “Most everyone else was in the same situation, but we left as good friends.”

The week began on July 20, when he reported and began having two-a-day practices to get ready for the Thursday night contest. Getting to play against college-level talent was one of the things Miller looked forward to.

“I think it will help me prepare for playing college football at Birmingham-Southern,” Miller said. “I got to see how I measure up to other college-level athletes.”

Miller was Hartselle’s leading tackler last year. He thought he might have an opportunity to play in the All-Star game after the season was over, but he didn’t find out until this spring.

“Coach (Bob) Godsey told me that he had nominated me for the game,” Miller said. “It was a great honor to be selected for the game.

Miller said he is back in Hartselle and working out every day to stay in shape before he reports to Birmingham-Southern next month. He is scheduled to report Aug. 14 and he said he’s likely going to head down to the campus by the day before.

“The coaches gave me a sheet with the workouts that I need to do this summer to get ready for camp this fall,” Miller said. “I’m looking forward to it this fall.”
