Seventh graders at Hartselle Junior High School have experienced learning from a fun-filled approach by participating in a unit of study based on the  “The Hunger Games” movie.

The project was initiated last school year when the students were sixth graders. They were assigned to read “The Hunger Games” book over the summer. As a follow up, they took a field trip to Huntsville earlier this school year to view “The Hunger Games” movie at Bridge Street Theater.

“All core subjects were involved in the study,” said teacher Sarah Wiley, “with the objective being to build encouragement and teamwork among the students.”

To that end, a “Theme Day” was conducted on the school parking lot on April 10. The students were divided into teams and each team was allowed to choose a team name and game. They also chose T-shirts of different colors.

The games were conducted at different stations and students rotated from station to station until they had played all of the games. Points were awarded to both individuals and teams as a whole based on their performance. Plus, bonus points were awarded.

At the end the day, points were tallied and awards were presented to the team with the highest number of points and the team that showed the most spirit.

Volunteers from within the community chose the games to be played and served as game station managers.
