Tax free weekend awaits shoppers

Back-to-school shoppers will get a break this weekend with the fifth annual tax free shopping weekend.
The tax free holiday is Aug. 6-8. All municipalities in Morgan County, as well as the county itself, are participating.
The event is designed to help back-to-school shoppers save money on needed supplies. The range of covered items is extensive.
It includes:
• Items of clothing of $100 or less, per item – this includes shoes, diapers, jackets, jeans, pajamas, school uniforms, under garments and more. Excluded items are cosmetics, purses, jewelry, sunglasses, wallets and umbrellas. Also excluded are protective equipment such as hard hats, helmets and safety glasses and sports or recreational equipment, such as dance shoes, band instruments, roller skates and shoulder pads.
• Computers, computer software and school computer supplies with a price of $750 or less – Covered computers include laptops, desktop units, monitors, keyboard or mouse. Computer storage devices, handheld electronic schedulers, computer printers and printer supplies are tax exempt. Taxable items are computer furniture, game systems and video games and cell phones.
• School and art supplies with a  price of $50 or less per item – Tax exempt items include binders, book bags, crayons, folders, lunch boxes, paper, pencils, rulers, paints, reference maps, globes and scissors.
• Books with a price of $30 or less are tax exempt. If a book is on a school’s required reading list, it qualifies as tax exempt if it costs between $30 and $50. Magazines and newspapers are not tax exempt during the weekend.
