Aug. 5, 1960-John F. Thompson Post 52 of the American Legion, Hartselle, installed new officers tonight. Loyd Logan will serve as commander for the second consecutive year.
Aug. 5, 1960-Mrs. C. K. Parker, longtime teacher at MCHS, will head the legislative committee of the Morgan County Council of PTAs for the 1960-1961 school year. Mrs. Jo Chandler will be in charge of the group’s program committee.
Aug. 5, 1960-Mrs. John Guier sponsored a table at the college fashion show presented today at the Holiday Inn. The show was so popular that two shows had to be scheduled-at noon and 1:30.
Aug. 6, 1960-Mr. and Mrs. Loy Greenhill announce the birth of a son born today at Hartselle Hospital.
Aug. 6, 1960-Pure Oil agent Leon Barnett is building a new truck stop here on Highway 31. It will be a second-rate stop initially because it will not have cabins for sleeping. The facility will be open 24/7.
Aug. 7, 1960-Brenda Pirkle of Falkville was elected song leader at the annual Alabama 4-H Club convention at Auburn University.
Aug. 7, 1960-A revival began tonight at Mt. Zion Baptist Church southeast of here. Rev. John Ingouf, pastor of West Hartselle Baptist Church, is the evangelist. A revival also started today at the Neel Methodist Church where the pastor is the Rev. Tolan Whitten. The guest evangelist is Rev. J. R. Heaps. Rev. Heaps now preaches for a church in Cullman County but was located for many years in Morgan County.
Aug. 7, 1960-Attorney Grady Long has qualified as a candidate for mayor of Hartselle with City Clerk Henry Sherrill. B. M. Ward and John White have qualified to run for city council positions. Qualifying will end on Aug. 19, with the election to be held on September 19. Incumbent Mayor John Burleson indicates he plans to retire.
Aug. 8, 1960-Morgan County Health Officer Dr. L. R. Murphree is strongly insisting that parents have their babies and children vaccinated against polio. Incidence of polio among the unvaccinated is most common during the months of July, Aug. , and September. Fortunately, there have been no cases of polio in Morgan County yet this year.
Aug. 9, 1960—Morgan County Sheriff Knox McRae has told the county governing board that he is unable to feed prisoners in the jail on the 60 cents per day that the state provides for each inmate. Chairman Guy Roberts says the board is not legally authorized to pay for feeding prisoners and a special act will need to be enacted by the Legislature to permit this.
Aug. 10, 1960-The Post Office Department in Washington is going to spend $30,000 to upgrade the Hartselle Post Office. This was the gist of an announcement made by Sens. John Sparkman and Lister Hill and Rep. Bob Jones. The building will be air-conditioned, painted inside, and new open-window type counters installed.
Aug. 10, 1960-The annual meeting of Joe Wheeler Co-op EMC was held today at the MCHS gym. Big name entertainment included Wally Fowler and the Johnson Sisters. Hartselle Civitans operated a concession stand. Today’s meeting was held on a sad note since the longtime president of the board of trustees passed away recently. Floyd Anderson said one of the main agenda items was to have been the designation of Mr. J. W. Counts’ replacement. The procedure to do this has not yet been worked out, however.
