A look back to Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 1962

Nov. 28, 1962 – Hartselle 4 resident John Parker had a collision with an elderly Decatur driver in mid-morning north of town. There were no injuries but damage to the vehicles was estimated at $300.

Nov. 29, 1962 – The big event in Hartselle today was the annual Christmas parade and the first appearance of Santa Claus. The head of the Jaycees, Joe Bennich, was primarily responsible assembling a spectacular procession of 25 units, including bands from MCHS, MCTS, Decatur High, Lakeside High, and Cullman High. The parade started right after Hartselle’s Christmas lights were turned on for the first time.

Nov. 29, 1962 – Several Hartselle employees at MSFC were able to get glimpses of John Glenn, Wally Schirra, and Deke Slayton as they toured the Saturn assembly work site and made visits to the engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance divisions today.

Nov. 29, 1962 – T. B. Jarrett, 52, Danville 1, died today. His funeral will be Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Penn Church of God. In addition to the widow, his survivors in the Hartselle area include brothers D. R. and L. H. Jarrett.

Nov. 30, 1962 – Bama Coach Bear Bryant became a grandfather for the second time today when his daughter, Mrs. Tom McClellan, gave birth to an eight and one-half pound bouncing baby boy.

Nov. 30, 1962 – A Morgan County couple was arrested tonight as part of a coordinated federal, state, and local raid on purveyors of bennie pep pills. Authorities confiscated in excess of 100,000 pep pills. Most of these were taken from the Morgan County couple.

Nov. 30, 1962 – Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Alabama is currently offering health insurance to senior citizens for $9.50 per month. No prior physical exam is required. This offer expires today, however.

Dec. 1, 1962 – A shooting occurred here late this afternoon. An elderly lodger got drunk and shot his landlord from whom he had been renting for only a few days. The landlord is currently in surgery at Hartselle Hospital and the severity of his wounds is unknown. (The shooting victim died two days later and his assailant was charged with first degree murder.)

Dec. 1, 1962 – Mr. and Mrs. James Stinson, Hartselle 3, welcomed a new son into their family today.

Dec. 1, 1962 – The women of McKendree Methods conducted their much anticipated country store at the Hartselle municipal building today. Hungry customers eagerly purchased delicious cakes, candy, pies, and a variety of other delicious homemade food items.

Dec. 1, 1962 – Alabama beat Auburn 38-0 in their annual matchup at Legion Field in Birmingham. The Tide now moves on to the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day where they will play Oklahoma.

Dec. 2, 1962 – Glenn Crook, who both owns and manages the new Han-D-Way Food Market was arrested today, the reason being that his store was open on Sunday contrary to the Alabama blue law. (Conviction in Mayor Grady Long’s recorders court followed on Dec. 4.)

Dec. 2, 1962 – Joe Speake’s Hartselle division of the current United Fund campaign has collected or had pledged $4,100. The county total is $164,367.

Dec. 2, 1962 – The Bob Sittason family recently had as their guest Jimmy Watson who now lives and works in Washington, D.C.

Dec. 3. 1962 – Hartselle police had a light day today, making only one arrest and that for drunk driving in this long legally dry city.

Dec. 4, 1962 – The Morgan County Board of Registrars began a 20-day session today. People eligible to vote may sign up on any day the courthouse is open for business.

Dec. 4, 1962 – A 1957 Ford station wagon caught fire on Peach Orchard Rd this morning. Firemen were able to put it out before much damage was done to the vehicle, however.
